Problem with Google Patents (A lack of Governmental understanding)
I am concerned with the lack of IT knowledge that has led to the granting of Google’s search page results being patented. I believe that patents of this nature have no real bearing in the web today. If you look at the basic elements of a Google search page, you can see that it is nothing but text and advertising in very simple design. The idea of patenting such a ‘design’ lacks merit and outlines the need for more IT intellegence in areas of goverment, legal advice and law enforcement. Most of the issues with countries such as Australia not being able to take advantage of a growing IT industry is the lack of knowledge within the government… most universities are struggling to keep up with the world standard of IT knowledge… Australia could become a vacuum of IT knowledge as we see call centres and software developers in poorer nations a good fix for the expensive IT industry… IT should be about research and development making the future better… not cost cutting and cheapening to make short term profits look good…. even if there are some industries that lack IT inviltration, in 20 years time, can anyone really pass IT off as a dirty science? I really hope not, but at the same time, big government and legal departments need to wake up and see what the rest of the advanced world is doing… and if that is too hard then have a look at New Zealand they are taking communications and IT advancements to the next level… its a pity that Australia could be left behind when an advanced wireless, broadband connected and high quality software oppourtunity was there for the taking… but since our glory days of a top 10 IT nation… we are slipping fast and soon our economy will hurt too. (Maybe then we will notice, just like it takes rising sea levels to wake us up about global warming!?!?!)
Just an add to that, regardless if Google’s search results design are now patented… doesn’t anyone else feel that the silly advertising all over the patented results design is better focused on the entered search keywords (that you entered), than the ACTUAL web page results these days? I guess if I was making multi-billions off advertising, I would put more effort in to that as well, but still there is still more search engines that Google, right?
